: GABAA ([gamma]-n-aminobutyric acid) receptor dysfunction has long been implicated in the development of epilepsy and status epilepticus. Recent advances have been made in understanding the cellular, pharmacological and genetic involvement of GABAA receptors in seizure disorders. In particular, genetic mutations found in GABAA receptor subunits strongly implicate the GABAA receptor in idiopathic generalised epilepsies.
