: During the last few years, numerous reports have appeared in medical literature describing a type of pneumonia differing from both lobar and bronchopneumonia. Many confusing terms and designations have been suggested for this disease but it is generally referred to as atypical pneumonia.

Although the disease is commonly regarded as a new entity, Dingle and Finland,1 in reviewing the literature on this type of pneumonia, found that as long ago as 1872, a similar disease and pathological picture was described. They noted also the existence of a condition in the military forces, even before the pandemic of influenza in 1918,
